Ask us where this has got toChecking a school properly
- Call the admissions office and ask about places for your child’s year group, for the year you would be joining. A school three minutes away with a two-year waiting list is not nearby in any sense that matters.
- Ask for the fee structure in writing, including admission, security and annual charges. This frequently changes the calculation more than the house price does.
- Ask whether their van covers this address. Many schools run defined routes, and being just outside one is common.
- Drive the school run at 7:15am. Not at midday. The school run and the morning commute happen at the same time on the same road.
Checking healthcare properly
- Find the nearest emergency department that is actually open at three in the morning, and know the route. This is the only healthcare question that is genuinely about distance.
- Find the nearest pharmacy open late, on foot if possible.
- Ask whether the hospitals near you are on your employer’s panel or your insurance network, if you have either.
- Drive the emergency route once. Knowing it in advance is worth more than a name on a list.
Why we publish a method instead of a list
Because a list ages badly and cannot be checked. A school’s availability, fees and van routes change every year; a hospital’s emergency provision changes; and a name in a brochure printed two years ago tells you about neither.
When the surveyed list appears above it will carry a date and a stated radius, and it will be re-surveyed rather than left to rot. Until then, the method is more useful to you than a list we could have copied from a competitor’s page.
